Funding Assistance

You may be eligible for financial assistance to obtain skill training, adult basic education, or English as a Second Language. You may qualify for financial assistance for tuition, books and supplies, commuting and living supports while in training. If your course is not offered locally you may be assisted with the costs of transportation.

Are you eligible?

You are technically eligible if you are an active Employment Insurance recipient, or you have established a claim for Employment Insurance in the last three years, or 5 years if it was a maternity/paternity benefit.

You must also be unemployed, which is defined as:
You are working less than an average of 20 hours per week and are actively seeking full time employment
Or
You are in receipt of a notice of imminent lay-off
Or
You must leave your current occupation due to medical reasons.

Considerations

If you cannot obtain work with your current skills, it is important to explore your options and define your plan with an employment counsellor at Employment Central.

The course of study you are considering must be offered through an accredited training institute.

Mobility may be an issue as the program of study might be offered out of the Territory. Willingness to relocate to secure work may be necessary.

Action Plans

You will be required to develop a Return to Work Action Plan with an Employment Counsellor at Employment Central, or one of the other service providers in Whitehorse; Yukon Council on Disability or Service d’Orientation et de Formation des Adultes. This includes registering with the Centre and attending an appointment with a counsellor to discuss and develop your return to work action plan.

You will be provided with an application kit to complete for funding assistance at this time.

Research

One of the important parts of completing the application process is to research the occupation and the industry in which you want to work. You do want to be sure that there will be jobs available for you in your chosen field. Research can be done by reading about the career in a variety of books and resources, checking on the internet, and speaking to individuals who work in that industry.

Referral to Employment Support Services

Once you have completed your application kit the next step is to make an appointment with Employment Support Services, which is a service funded by Human Resources Development Canada. The Manager of Employment Support Services will discuss your plan with you and if you are approved for funding, negotiate the amount of funds that would be issued.

Allow 4-6 weeks for the entire process
