Full-time Mental Health Counsellor for Atlin

The community of Atlin, British Columbia, requires a full-time clinical Social Worker/Mental Wellness Counsellor. Atlin is a remote community of about 400 located in the northwestern corner of BC, on the shores of the province's largest natural lake. The closest city is Whitehorse, Yukon, 186 km away. The setting is spectacular. Atlin is the perfect location for a self-reliant and adaptable practitioner. The successful candidate will be employed on a sub-contract basis by the Big Water Society, under our funding contract with Northern Health Authority (NHA). Salary commensurate with experience and includes annual paid vacation. Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Provision of clinical services per written NHA requirements (assessment, short-term counselling, counselling for chronic conditions, mental health crisis response, and referrals) to referred and self-referring individuals of all ages, families and groups.
• Provision of services as outlined in referrals from provincial Ministries.
• Responsibilities include clinical assessments, short-term and long-term counselling and clinical referrals.
• Liaison between and amongst community agencies and partner Ministries, and coordination of the services provided.
• Participation in community-based case conferencing for Interagency and Probations services.
• Maintenance of client records, familiarity with Privacy requirements and knowledge of and adherence to ethical norms and appropriate boundaries.
• Preparation and submission to Northern Health Authority of all required reports.
• Presentation of required reports to Big Water Society Board members.

The successful candidate must:
• Possess a Masters of Social Work or Bachelors of Social Work degree, or equivalent.
• Be registered with the BC College of Social Workers (preferred) or BC College of Psychologists or equivalent regulatory body.
• Have a minimum of 5 years experience working as a mental health/clinical counsellor with a broad range of clients, including standard and acute or complex dual-diagnosis cases, be comfortable with diverse cultural traditions and remote community living.
• Be knowledgeable about and skilled in effective psychotherapy methods, practices and procedures. Preference will be given to individuals competent in dealing with trauma-based issues, PTSD, grief and loss counselling, and Residential School Syndrome, and who have experience working with those with complex, chronic, or concurrent disorders.
• Have demonstrated ability to work effectively and comfortably in a cross-cultural setting.
• Be a well-organized adaptable individual capable of working both independently and as a team member.
• Have a valid driver's license, and a fully insured reliable vehicle.
• Have successfully undergone a criminal records check, prior to start date.
